I know all of you are SO SHOCKED that Trump’s main motivation for running again is using the office to shield himself from criminal prosecution. Via Rolling Stone:

It’s not just liberal wish-casters or Trump critics who are acknowledging the former president’s legal jeopardy. Trump’s teams of lawyers and former senior administration officials speak about it commonly. “I do think criminal prosecutions are possible…for Trump and [former White House chief of staff Mark] Meadows certainly,” Ty Cobb, a former top lawyer in Trump’s White House, bluntly told Rolling Stone late last month.

Trump himself seems to acknowledge potential problems. He “said something like, ‘[prosecutors] couldn’t get away with this while I was president,’” another one of the four sources recalls. “It was during a larger discussion about the investigations, other possible 2024 [primary] candidates, and what people were saying about the Jan. 6 hearings … He went on for a couple minutes about how ‘some very corrupt’ people want to ‘put me in jail.’”

As tragic as the loss of life on January 6th was, Van Tatenhove testified during Tuesday’s January 6th committee hearing, “the potential was so much more.” He cited the gallows that was set up for Vice President Mike Pence as just one indication of the horrific possibilities.

The possibility of bloodshed “has been there from the start,” Van Tatenhove said. Then, his voice halting with emotion at times, Van Tatenhove said he thinks we will probably not be so lucky next time.

VAN TATENHOVE: I do fear for this next election cycle because who knows what that might bring if a president that’s willing to try to instill, and encourage, to whip up a civil war amongst his followers using lies and deceit and snake oil, and regardless of the human impact, what else is he going to do if he gets elected again? All bets are off at that point. And that’s a scary notion.

I have three daughters. I have a granddaughter. And I fear for the world that they will inherit if we do not start holding these people to account.

Further solidifying the U.S. Republican Party’s ties to Hungarian authoritarian leader Viktor Orbán, the American Conservative Union has invited the prime minister to speak at right-wing political activists’ annual conference in August.

Orbán will join allies of former President Donald Trump including Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) and Fox News host Sean Hannity—and likely Trump himself—at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) from August 4-7, three months after “CPAC Hungary,” the group’s auxiliary meeting in Budapest where the prime minister advised conservatives to take control of the U.S. media to increase their power.

“They’re just not even pretending to care anymore” about the implications of openly associating with an autocrat, said Ryan Cooper of The American Prospect.

Monday, Fox News host Martha MacCallum put up a graphic of the latest 2024 presidential poll from the NY Times/Siena College between President Biden and Trump showing Biden is ahead.

MacCallum asked Devin Nunes about the latest numbers to gauge his reaction.

“This is the poll for the 2024 presidential election, if it were held today who would you vote for, 44% Biden, 41% Trump,” MacCallum noted.

Nunes, a supreme Trump sycophant, refused to answer her question, instead veering off into proclaiming that no other candidate could beat him in a Republican presidential primary.

That’s not what MacCallum asked so it must be hitting a sore spot for MAGA. And Ron DeSantis may have a say in who runs in 2024.

There’s not a lot of good news in the latest poll for the Democratic Party, either party really, with the country still reeling from COVID systemic shortages and supply chain issues.

But I still found this very interesting

When the conservative-leaning Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling that guaranteed a constitutional right to abortion, most of us wondered how far they would take it. Like, for example, are they going after LGBTQ+ rights next? Well, Justice Clarence Thomas answered that question pretty quickly. Yes, nothing is off the table. And what about a woman’s right to vote?

Behold: James Vincent in the video answered that question for us.

“Christian nationalism is on the rise, and people are thirsty for it,” he said. “We are the Christian Taliban, and we will not stop until The Handmaid’s Tale is a reality, and even worse than that to be honest.”

The little feller went on to say that they are trying to roll back rights for women for 100 years. “It’s only going to get worse for you,” he added.

Conservative men like to make women suffer. It’s what they do. It’s as if they feel like less of a man if women have their rights. I’m not a psychiatrist, but I think a lot of them must have mommy issues. James should just go overseas and join the Taliban. Meanwhile, women, and friends of women, need to ensure that Republicans don’t take the House or the Senate.

Vincent gins up racial fear by bringing up black-on-white crime, and he thinks it ought to be a crime to be gay. And ladies, I could be wrong, but I think he’s single. Now’s your chance!

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele warned that Republicans will “absolutely” do away with the Senate filibuster in order to enact a federal abortion ban if they take over the chamber next year.

During a Monday appearance on MSNBC, Steele was asked if he agreed with Democrats who are concerned that Republicans might kill the filibuster to enact a 15-week abortion ban.

“Yes, without a doubt or hesitation,” Steele agreed. “They’ll set the marker.”

“Do you think they’ll kill the filibuster to do it?” MSNBC host Katy Tur asked.

“Absolutely,” Steele confirmed. “Because it’s in their base’s interest to do so. That’s the difference politically between the two parties. Republicans will go, ‘Oh, yeah, the Constitution and the filibuster, all the tradition, the sanctity of the Senate.’ They don’t give a rat’s patootie about that when it’s the bottom line in politics and power.”

“So absolutely, a national ban on abortion will be one of the first pieces of legislation probably next to impeaching Joe Biden,” he concluded.

The spread of the “constitutional sheriffs” movement—which claims that local county sheriffs are the supreme law of the land, capable of overruling federal and state laws, as well as prohibiting federal and state agencies from enforcing them—throughout rural American sheriff’s offices has often seemed like a quaint but localized problem: Sure, having set themselves up as laws unto themselves, they seem to always run their jurisdictions like private fiefdoms, but it doesn’t affect people outside those counties.

But we have in fact seen—notably in the case of Klickitat County, Washington’s “constitutional” sheriff, who undermined the entire state’s ability to regulate the hunting of endangered mountain lions—that in fact their actions can have broad consequences. That’s especially the case with Michigan “constitutional sheriff” Dar Leaf, who was exposed recently spearheading a broader effort to enlist other sheriffs in seizing voting machines from local election officials to ostensibly prove Donald Trump’s Big Lie about fraud in the 2020 vote.

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon’s attempt at a fiery populist speech in front of a federal courthouse was marred by a single protester on Wednesday.

Bannon is asking a Trump-appointed judge to dismiss two contempt of Congress charges against him for refusing to cooperate with the Jan. 6 Committee.

When he arrived at the courthouse Wednesday morning, his team was already waiting and prepared to stream the video to a pro-MAGA social media network.

Bannon spoke from behind a meager assembly of two microphones. He was barely audible on the Gettr stream.

He attacked the Jan. 6 Committee because “their ratings stink and they can’t compete with the trial of Bannon.”

“That’s why they canceled,” he said, referring to a Wednesday hearing.

As Bannon ranted, a lone protester with a “Failed Coup” sign strategically flanked him.

One reporter asked Bannon if his goal was authoritarianism.

“We believe in free and fair and transparent elections! And we’re winning everywhere!” he exclaimed. “This is going to be a massive blowout like 1932. You’re witnessing, right now, a political realignment like 1932. And we will govern for 100 years after we win 100 seats.”

“Do you want to govern as a one-party kind of total government?” the reporter wondered. “Do you want to destroy the Democratic Party?”

According to new research, the searing “megadrought” that has gripped the southwest U.S. for more than two decades is the driest 22-year period in at least 1,200 years. The scientific record, which started around the year 800, shows the region hasn’t seen a more severe drought. Via the Scientific American:

An exceptionally dry year in 2021 helped break the record. Before last year, a previous megadrought occurring in the late 1500s was the only other drought known to be worse than today. A megadrought is typically defined as a severe dry period lasting at least a couple of decades.

The current event has been strongly influenced by human-caused climate change, the study said. In fact, without the influence of global warming, today’s conditions probably wouldn’t be classified as a megadrought at all.

“It probably wouldn’t even be a continuous drought,” said Benjamin Cook, a NASA climate scientist and a co-author of the new study, published in Nature Climate Change. “We still would have had a drought. It still would have been reasonably bad. But it would be nowhere near the record-breaking event that we’re seeing right now.”

Matt Gaetz introduced his own conspiracy theory to instill fear and loathing in Republicans. In his fevered mind, Democrats are planting false flags before the midterm so teens must arm themselves with AR-15s to protect themselves from violent Democrats.

On Real America’s Voice, Gaetz outlined a massive QAnon-sized false flag operation where Democrats have been slowly plotting acts of violence against Republicans as a precursor for the midterms to the scum-sucking weasel, Steve Bannon.

Gaetz said Nancy Pelosi calling Republicans members of a cult is the beginning. By their actions, that’s exactly what they have become. Any member of the GOP like Adam Kinzinger or Liz Cheney that objects to the many lies MAGA spews are attacked and banished from the party altogether.

Gaetz claimed Democrats have abolished the police and are disarming Americans while justifying violence against poor defenseless conservatives.

Where and when has that happened? Nowhere.

I see police cars everywhere and no new gun restrictions have been passed so what’s the hubbub, bub?

A conspiracy needs no evidence or truth, just a mouthpiece a-hole like Gaetz to amplify it. If he’s saying it’s so, that makes it so in MAGA world.

Then Gaetz claimed peaceful protests against Supreme Court judges getting ready to overturn Roe v. Wade was the next phase of their false flag operations for the midterm election.

Then he filled out his prophesy.
